The Constitution was written back in 1787. It was made with many rules of how are country was to be run, and one of them was the separation of Church and State.
Along with the Constitution ,the Bill of rights was also written explaining the rights of US citizens. One of these rights included the ability to practice any religion that they desired.
We hate the Catholic movement in America!
The first Bishop in the US was needed since the US was separate from the rest of the Church. The people of the US elected their first Bishop as leader of the Church in the West, and John Carroll was the first Bishop of Baltimore. Carroll struggled with finding non- English speaking priests, but he eventually planted the Catholic seed in North America.
Wir feiern die eucharistie auf deutsch!
In a span of about 90 years, from 1830 to 1920, three waves of Catholic immigrants, from Ireland, Germany, and Italy and Eastern Europe, immigrated to the US and made up the majority of Catholics in America. They often lived in slums with their fellow immigrants.
Around the 1830s, prejudice started spreading against Catholics. The Activists, or native protestants, and the Know-Nothings created and spread rumors that the Catholic immigrants were planning on taking over America. This ignited riots in the cites and people harassed convents and churches. Around the 1890s, Catholic bigotry decreased.
As more and more immigrants came to the US from all over the world, they wanted to celebrate mass in their native language. So the Germans, for example, had one of their own be a priest or have the priest say mass in German, mainly at their own parishes since mass at other parishes was English or another language. (translation: We celebrate the Eucharist in German!)
