Mr. Pontellier returns home from the club late at night. He wakes up a sleeping Edna to happily recount his night. He grows irritated when she does not seem to respond to him.
Mr. Pontellier has forgot to bring sweets home for the kids but he goes to check on them while they are sleeping.
Mr. Pontellier reports that Raoul has a fever, but Edna does not believe him. Mr. Pontellier smokes a cigar and criticizes her for poor mothering until she finally leaves to check on Raoul.
Edna returns to a sleeping Mr. Pontellier but she feels awake. She suddenly begins to cry because of tonight's events.
The next day, Mr. Pontellier leaves a generous amount of money for Edna as he departs for New Orleans for the week, which she plans to use for her sister's wedding. The neighborhood gives him a warm sendoff.
During the week Edna receives a package of sweets from Mr. Pontellier. The ladies comment that Mr. Pontellier must be the greatest husband. Edna solemnly agrees that she has heard of none better.
