Locke: I believe all people have natural rights. But I also believe the people should have a contract with the government where the government protects our natural rights, and we agree to follow the laws. And if the government breaks the contract the people have the right to abolish them.
Paine: I believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and I believe the government's only job is to protect our natural rights. Also I think the colonists no longer need the British government.
Locke: My ideas about the three basic rights (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness) had an influence on the declaration of independence.
Paine: In Common Sense I argued for independence from British rule and I used it to rally the colonists against them.
