A Fair-haired boy named Ralph and a chubby boy called Piggy introduce themselves. Through their small talk it is revealed that there is a war going on and a plane carrying English boys was shot down. Moreover, they discover a conch shell which is blown to reunite all the boys and serves as a token of authority and society.
The boys discover a pig stuck in vines and discuss the best way of killing it.Additionally, they create a fire to act as a signal for rescue. This shows how the group is starting to come together. They conclude that meat is important and that they should have a group of boys designated to hunting. Furthermore, the conch will be used as a rite to speak during assemblies.
Ralph and Simon start to build shelters on the beach While they do this, Jack and the other boys go off and hunt. Frustrated that it's only him and Simon working he complains to Jack about it This brings the concept of Nature vs society or savagery vs Civilization into the book.
Thed boys notice ship on the horizon. They proceed to check if the fire is still lit but it is burnt out. all the meanwhile jack has painted his face with others and is hunting. This shows the shift in priority on the island, as now most of the boys are prioritizing hunting. ALstly, the "littluns" kae mention of a "Beastie".
Ralph once again frustrated at the lack of any societal work or aid from the other boys calls a meeting to discuss it. Ralph states that there is no best on the island, Jack follows that up with if there was he'd kill it. A littlun speaks up saying that he saw the beast comes from the sea. Jack and other boys then storm of to go hunt. Piggy wants Ralph to blow ther conch to gather everyone again, but Ralph concludes that it's pointless, showing a slight loss in hope.
A dog fight from the war is happening in the sky above the island. In the midst of it a pilot is ejected while being dead. The boys mistake it for a beast and proceed to go on an expedition to investigate it.
