Storyboard Text

  • Lily
  • "How I hated T.Ray and the girls at my school but mainy myself for killing my mother"
  • Rosaleen
  • "Her name, Rosaleen Daise, was written twenty-five times at least down the page in large, careful cursive, like the first paper you turn in when school starts."
  • August
  • "August is so intelligent, so cultured and I was so surprised by this"
  • Lily is a 14 year old girl who went on a journey because she wanted t find more information about her dead mother and left her house because of her cruel father; T.Ray
  • T.Ray
  • Rosaleen is Lily's "housekeeper" and she had gotten in trouble downtown that led her to jail and the hospital for getting beat up, and pouring "snuff" on a white mans shoes.
  • June
  • "But she's white, August."
  • August lives in her own bright pink house with her two other sisters May, and June. August is a very independent, strong and wise African American.
  • May
  • T.Ray is Lily's abusive father that she ran away from. T.Ray makes Lily kneel on grits for different times during the day and night. He is a very big racist. For example on page 283 Lily and Zach are talking and it says "Zach knocking on the door of T.Ray Owens house. It could never happen."
  • "Go ahead, try and hit me I yelled, My mother would never let you touch me." "Your mother? You think that god damn woman gave a shit about you?
  • June is one of August's sisters who used to be a teacher but now plays the cello for dying people. She has a boyfriend named Neill but she won't marry him because she has a bad past were she was supposed to get married but the groom doesn't show up. Also the first day Lily showed up, June did not like Lily because she resented her mother.
  • May is the last sister of the Boatwrights. She is an odd and mentally woman who becomes extremely depressed whenever something tragic happens to anyone. Whenever it happens she writes it down on a piece of paper and slips it into the "wailing wall". Later in the story, she committed suicide and left a note. She not only tells Lily that Deborah lived with them but also June to marry Neill.
  • "Rosaleen and I stared at her as her humming turned into hard crying. She cried like Aprils death had happened only this second."
