The girl, Alice, is deaf. Then when Thomas Gallaudet realized he could teach deaf people, he set out with money from Mason Cogswell, Alice's dad to England to learn how to teach deaf people and prove how smart they really are.
Gallaudet arrived in England and headed to the Braidwood Academy where he was given rules he was NOT happy with, as well as the snobby ways of the school.

Gallaudet found a flyer in England, he decides to not go to Braidwood to learn and sets sail to Paris in order to find Sicard's workshop.

Gallaudet gets to the workshop and Sicard agrees to teach him. His two deaf students help Gallaudet and he befriends Clerc who agress to come back to america and help Gallaudet make the first U.S. deaf school.

On the boat, Clerc and Gallaudet exchange signs while Gallaudet learns French sigh language. By the time they arrive in Connecticut Galladuet is fluent in FSL.
Clerc and Galladuet opened the school in Connecticut, making it the first U.S. based all deaf school. Clerc was named the 1st deaf teacher in U.S. history and Alice was the 1 student admitted to the school.
