Under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell, the parliament won the civil war. Charles was executed, the first time a king was executed and Cromwell was appointed the new king. He ruled as a military dictator.
After Cromwell died, Charles II was selected as King by the parliament. During Charles II's rule, it was called the restoration period because Charles II restored the monarchy. He also passed down rights to prisoners by making an important guarantee of freedom, the habeas corpus.
