Setting: Church vs. Ponyboy
There are two sides that are almost always against each other, east vs. west. socs live on the south side and greaser live on the north, socs are rich and like to beat up the greasers. growing up where Ponyboy lives made it hard for him to even walk around by himself. "No, next time get one of us to go with you it's not safe alone. After living somewhere were there is a chance of getting beat up anywhere you go it can toughen you up a bit.
Ponyboys relationship with the socs affects his everyday life. After killing Bob in self-defense ponyboy and johnny go to dally were he suggests they hide in a church. Not only are they hiding in a church but Ponyboy and johnny are living with the fact that they are murders. Even as they sit in the church talking with each other cutting each others hair so it wouldn't fit their descriptions."We'd have to if we got caught." (74) This chapter is really the moment where readers realize that ponyboy lost his gold.
A burning fire that started on page 92 left Ponyboy with a decision that could change his life. After Pony and Johnny rush into the fire to save the children Johnny is left with a terrible injury that would later in the story kill him. Ponyboy would not be upest if Johhny didn't die, because of the fire. In the hospital after Johhny died Pony was saying "He isn't dead, I said to myself. He isn't dead. And this time my dreaming worked I convinced myself he wasn't dead." (pg 150) Showing how even Greasers can have deep emotions too and they are not always tough.
