  • I am Alia. For my class project,  We are  going to take you on a trip to the past of the south
  • Even through most slave masters tried to keep the Slaves from doing their religion and culture , the slaves found a way.
  • I am Alex. I will show you the geographic and economic features of the south.
  • I am Alana. I will show you the political and cultural features of the south.
  • I am Alyx. I will show you the social features of the south.
  • So planters were A-class? And then I am guessing small farmers, then poor farmers and at the bottom slaves?
  • Wow, this room! You had to have a lot of money to live here
  • So basically the more slaves you had the more rich you were? 
  • Most major cities in the south were near bodies of water because water allowed them to travel
  • Our first stop is political and...
  • Yes! The water watered crops. The south had fertile soil, warm climate and a long growing season.
  • Yes. The person who lives here owns a lot of slaves. People like that are called planters.
  • Yep. Most southerners were farmers too. So not a lot of people had big homes.
  • Yes, basically.
  • Most people could not read or write, so few people were part of the government.
  • Wow! That is a lot of plants! Was there a thing called the cotten gin?
  • Ya. Along the way, Lincoln became president in the election of 1860
  • Oops! Your right. I'm just skipping important history points aren't I?
  • You have learned about society and now political 
  • Along with good soil, the south planted cotten,tabacco,rice,indigo and many other plants.
  • He did? Before that wasn't there a Kansas and Nebraska territory in 1853? 
  • The government was gaining, seeking and organizing power. Right?
  • Ya.It allowed slaves to gather cotten faster. There were more slaves after the cotten gin.
  • Just a little!
  • Ya. Because of them we sing songs during church services.
  • Yes! Slaves also made things like jazz and gumbo. A lot of American culture is made up of African culture 
  • You mean they still practiced their religion sang their  songs?
  • Really? Is it true that they made their own instruments?
  • Really? That's cool!
  •  Was it because water travel was cheap and easy?
  • Wow! The south did a lot of farming.
  • There were many types of slaves too,right? Ones who worked in fields, house hold, and many more right?
  • What?? No!! I have so many questions!! Ok fine. Thank you!
  • Ya.Slaves did most of the hard work. Thats all we have time for.
