  • It is discovered that Gatsby was born James Gatz on a North Dakota farm, he attended college at St. Olaf’s in Minnesota then dropped out after only 2 weeks. Then by the means of embarrassing janitorial duty, he worked in order to pay his tuition.
  • During the Summer, he works on Lake Superior as well where one day he saw a yacht owned by a guy named Dan Cody. Where Gatsby was taken in as is assistant where he fell in love with both wealth and luxury.
  • Because of Cody's excessive drinking binges Gatsby was well aware of the dangers of drinking alcohol. Then when Cody died, he left Gatsby with $25,000 of his inheritance, but Cody's mistress was able to prevent him from getting it. Gatsby since then promised himself he'd become a wealthy and successful man.
  • "I will be a wealthy man one day, with or without the inheritance money."
  • On a Saturday night, Tom and Daisy go to a party at Gatsby’s house. Although Tom has no interest in the party, he does want to keep an eye on Daisy especially around Gatsby. This time around Nick finds the party displeasing to the point even Daisy has a bad time.
  • "Oh Daisy, why don't you stay with me instead of him."
  • Gatsby wants things to be exactly how they they were before he left Louisville and just expects Daisy to leave Tom so that he can be with her instead. Nick then reminds him that he can't re-create the past. Upset, Gatsby states that his money can accomplish anything as far as Daisy is concerned. Nick now walking aimlessly realizes that Gatsby's dream is over before it even began.
  • "Tonight was probably one of the worst parties yet, even Daisy didn't enjoy it."
