Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old man with a mental disability that causes his intelligence levels to be below average. He lives in New York City. He takes a class to help him get smarter which is with the teacher Miss Kinnian. He works at a factory and has a few friends there as well.
Charlie wants to be smart, like everyone else. It's really hard for him to learn the simplest of spelling, but he works hard and tries his best to get smarter. Miss Kinnian recommends Charlie to take part in this experiment that might raise his IQ to 200. He goes through with the operation and for the first couple day there seems to be no raise of intelligence in Charlie, but they continue to give Charlie tests that are the same as Algernon's test. Also Algernon is a mouse.
Go away! I don't like you anymore Miss Kinnian!
Charlie please! Let me help you!
After a while Charlie does gain his intelligence. He starts to question everyone around the smarter he gets when he realizes that his friends at the factory were just using him for their entertainment. Though, because of his intelligence he did start some sort of love life with Miss Kinnian. He also made Algernon, the mouse, his first real friend.
Algernon is starting to act more aggressive, more depressed, and he has a lack of motivation. Eventually Algernon dies due to the experiment. Charlie decides to dissect Algernon to see what happen to him. Charlie see that Algernon's brain is smooth. This shows that Algernon lost the connections he had in his brain. At his moment, Charlie realizes if he doesn't do something, he may lose his intelligence and die like Algernon.
Charlie is starting to show the same symptoms that Algernon showed. Everyone is getting worried about him. Miss Kinnian tried to get him to to talk to her but he just turned her away. He was not able to find a way to stop himself from losing the intelligence he gained. Charlie is still trying to hold on to the little intelligence he has left.
Charlie decides to leave New York forever. Even though everyone he knows, including his coworkers are trying to help him, he feels as if he is a burden to them. Charlie leaves saying that he is still going to try to be smart again and he says that he is going to let people laugh at him so he can make friends like before.
