  • The French & Indian war
  • Stamp Act Passed
  • The Colonists are Outraged
  • Taxation without representation!
  • War erupted between Britain and France in north America. The French enlisted Natives to fight on their side, although England was victorious.
  • Boston Tea Party
  • England incurred a large debt over the war. Colonists benefited from England victory, and were expected to help pay. The Stamp Act that put a tax on paper and printed goods was passed.
  • Continental Congress
  • The colonists were furious. They argued that the act violated natural rights, an idea developed from Enlightenment thinkers. They argued they had no representation in parliament.
  • Shot Heard Round the World
  • In an attempt to protest a tax on tea, colonists dumped British tea into a Boston Harbor. The port of Boston was closed, ordered by King George III.
  • Representatives from all colonies meet at the first Continental Congress. They protested their treatment, and meet again to plan their moves against the British.
  • First gunfire is exchanged between American Colonies and the British in Lexington and spread to Concord. Continental Congress agrees to raise an Army under George Washington.
