  • In 1914, World War I began. It became known as the "Great War" with the Allied Powers and the Central Powers  fighting.  It was not until 1917, America had joined.  Follow along to see the various reasons behind America's entrance.
  • The Zimmerman Telegram
  • On May 7, 1915, the British ship, Lusitania, sinks resulting in the deaths of almost 2,000 people.  About one hundred of them were Americans.  The ship was shot down by a torpedo sent from a German U-boat. The sinking enraged Americans all over.  Americans were fired up at Germany and ready for war.
  • The Zimmerman Telegram
  • The German ambassador sent a message to American officials stating "Germany will begin unrestricted submarine warfare".  Americans were threatened and saw this as another example of aggression from Germany.  American's knew they were no longer safe.
  • AMERICA ENTERS WORLD WAR I
  • Germany sent Mexico a telegram known as the Zimmerman Note from the German Foreign Minister to the foreign ambassador of Mexico.  The telegram was directed towards the President stating Germany will offer Texas, Arizona and New Mexico to Mexico if war is declared on the US.  German wants to distract Americans with war and leave Britain isolated.
  • The Zimmerman telegram was caught by British forces and deciphered to reveals its message.  US officials released the message to the press enraging Americans everywhere.
  • The Zimmerman Telegram was the last straw.  All the offenses from Germany have added up.  Therefore, on April 2, President Wilson asks Congress to declare war on Germany.  Four days later, President Wilson signs the declaration of war.  America now has entered World War I with their many allies.
