Sam, do you know how your skin helps keep you from getting sick when you play outside?
Sam loves to play outside. He is playing with his car in the dirt.
His mom knows that the dirt contains potentially harmful pathogens, and decides to teach him about it.
The ground is full of dirt and bacteria trying to enter your body. These are known as pathogens.
It's a good thing that we have our skin! Without it, all the pathogens from outside like dirt and bacteria would have gotten in your body and you could have gotten sick!
Lucky for us, our skin is part of the 1st line of defense in our immune system, that protects us against all foreign objects trying to enter our bodies, whether good or bad! It is almost like a fence keeping everything unwanted out. The skin also secretes chemicals which help to eliminate some, but not all, pathogens.
The skin blocks the pathogens from entering the body at all, so when Sam washes his hands, the pathogens are flushed away or killed, and no longer a threat to him
The skin is a very critical part of the immune system, doing its best to keep bad things out and keep us healthy!
