In 1732, the Salzburgers were invited to live in Georgia for religious freedom. They created the town of Ebenezer, which failed miserably because of its poor location. John Oglethorpe eventually gave them new land, to which they named New Ebenezer.

The Salzbugers were very successful in producing silk and raising cattle.
Within the years of 1734 and 1737, the Salzburgers created the first Sunday school and the first orphanage. This caused the population to grow and more land was taken from the natives.
