Exposition: We are introduced to Dupin, a detective, and his unnamed side kick who narrates the story.
Conflict: 2 women are found dead in their apartment, their room a mess. One woman is stuffed up a chimney, the others throat is cut. A man named Adolphe Le Bon is arrested, as he is the only person with a motive .
Dupin reads the testimonies from witnesses and those who knew the victims. He and his sidekick go to the crime scene to investigate further and Dupin develops a deduction.
Climax: Dupin invites over a sailor who is the owner of the orangutan that Dupin believes to have committed the crime.
Falling action: The sailor tells the story of the crime, admitting that his orangutan was the culprit.
Resolution: Dupin reveals the truth to the police and they release the man they previously thought to have committed the crime.
