Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor wood cutter. While their parents were having a conversation, Hansel and Gretel was secretly listening. From the fear of starvation, their stepmother wants to abandon them in the woods. "Do thou think I'm going to keep my children in danger?" says the father. She insisted so much on that idea and the wood cutter finally agreed. Hansel says to the worried sister, "Don't cry, I have a good idea."
The next day, step mother gave them each a piece of bread "Here are thy bread for thou to eat before dinner." Soon, their parents took them in the forest. Hansel left a trail of breadcrumbs as they walked away from home. In deep forest, the stepmother said, "Stay here until we come back to pick thou guys up." They did as they were told, but then the night came. Next morning, they went to check the trail but it was not there, probably eaten by animals.
They walked around looking for their home in the forest. Then a house was standing right by them. Plus, it was made out of candy! They could not hold the hunger and started stuffing them into their mouth. Then the door opened and an old woman with a cane came out, "Oh, thou dear children, who has brought you here? Do come in, and stay with me. No harm should happen to thou." Hansel and Gretel went in.
Actually the old woman was a wicked witch with weak eyes, pretending to be kind. She built the sweet house just to entice children there. Early in the morning, Hansel was carried into a cage and locked him in. Then she woke up Gretel, "wake up thou lazy thing, cook thy brother something good and make him fat. Once he get fat enough, I'm going to kill and eat him." Poor Gretel worked the whole time and Hansel had to eat to become the witch's food.
Few weeks later, the witch could not wait anymore. She told Gretel to turn on the oven and she did so. "Gretel, creep in and check if it's properly heated.." Deep in her mind, she was going to shove her in and eat both of them. Gretel read her mind and said "I don't know how to check. Can thou demonstrate for me?" The witch crept in, and then.... Gretel pushed the witch in the oven with all her might and closed the iron door. The witch burned to death.
Gretel rescued Hansel from the cage. They found chests full of pearls and jewels in the witch's house and took them. They walked out of her house happily and after 2 days, they found their home. Their father had not known one happy hour since he had left the children in the forest. However, their step-mother was dead. Hansel and Gretel pulled out the pearls and precious stones and shared it with their father. Then all anxiety was at an end and they lived together in perfect happiness.
