A special food that Acadians eat during Mardi Gras is gumbo. Gumbo is a type of soup. Eating gumbo is just as important as dressing up and wearing masks during Mardi Gras.
A special event during Mardi Gras is the Children's Mardi Gras run. Kids gather early in the morning in their bright clothing and go around to farms and shops asking for donations for their gumbo. They are told to respect property.
An event in Cajun towns is Courir de Mardi Gras. Acadians ride on horses to nearby farms and preform a dance for the farmer. At the end the farmer pays them with either rice, onions, flour, sausage, or chicken.
