Storyboard Text

  • I wonder what happens when I eat fooooooooood!!
  • Chewbacca is going to eat a cheese sandwich including tomatoes and lettuce!
  • liver
  • Chewbacca grinds the food in small pieces and it gets mixed with saliva. Saliva is a digestive juice which helps digest food and makes it easier to swallow. It has amylase in, an enzyme, begins chemical digestion by breaking down starches into sugar. She gulps it down and now the cheese sandwich has entered the gullet, also known as the oesophagus. The muscles contract to push the food down to the stomach.
  • In the stomach, the cheese sandwich is churned up with hydrochloric acid (pH 1-2) and more digestive juices . The cheese is broken down by enzymes because protein is present.
  • In the small intestines, more digestive juices are added and the liver adds bile to help digest fats. This is when small , digested molecules of food are absorbed (taken in to the body.)Enzymes that digest carbohydrates, proteins and fats are produced.
  • Food we cannot digest (e.g fibre) goes to the large intestines, where water is removed this forms a more solid material called faeces.
  • The rectrum stores faeces, which are then pushed out of the anus in a process called elimination or egestion.
