Exposition: The story begins by describing how Dupin and the narrator meet.They live a secluded life together in Paris.
Conflict: Madame L'Espanaye and her daughter are both found dead after two voices are heard. The daughter is up the chimney and the mother is found decapitated in the courtyard.
Rising Action: Dupin and the narrator get permission to investigate the crime scene.
Climax: Dupin and the narrator conclude that the murderer is not human. They deduct that an Ourang-Outang committed the murders. An ad they put in the paper lures in the Ourang-Outang's owner.
Falling Action: Dupin and the narrator get information on the murders from the sailor in exchange for them finding the Ourang-Outang.
Resolution: LeBon is released from jail and the Ourang-Outang goes back to his owner.
