Boys and Girls
Esperanza thinks that everyone in her family has super beautiful hair, except for her. She says it never obeys barrettes or hair ties. Esperanza said her father´s hair is like a broom, her mother´s smells like bread, but her ¨hair is lazy¨ (Cisneros 6). She describes it as messy and unmanageable. Esperanza thinks her hair has nothing special to it just hair. Simple and dark and plain.
In the vignette, ¨Boys and Girls,¨ Esperanza is talking about how she thinks she, as a girl, is restricted of her freedom. She says boys are treated differently than girls because ¨they live in separate worlds,¨ (Cisneros 8). She also thinks that boys have life a little bit easier because of their gender. She says girls are treated poorer and as less than. She wishes that she could be free and able.
Esperanza is a girl that always thinks of herself as less than others. Some may even call her depressed. One thing she does not particularly like about her self is her name. She says it is boring like ¨a muddy color¨ (Cisneros 10). She wants something phenomenal or exquisite. She does not like the way it sounds. She states it as sounding like tin hitting the roof of your mouth. She says it sounds weird and unnatural.
