From the unsafety of staying in Copenhagen, Mama, Annemarie, Kirsti and Ellen went on a train to see Annemarie's uncle, Henrik, hoping that he could help. On the way there, soldiers were very suspicious of the passengers because of many Jews leaving their towns. In suspicion, one of the soldiers asked the girls where they were going and if they were leaving for the (Jewish) New Year. If they answered yes, the soldier would know that they were Jewish, and send them back immediately.
As they arrived, their eyes sparkled as they saw the beautiful house ahead of them. "Oh Annemarie, it's beautiful!" Ellen said with awe in her voice. Annemarie had to agree.
When all was well, Uncle Henrik broke it and told the girls that their had been a death, their Great Aunt Birte. But as Annemarie thought about it some more, she realized, there was no Great Aunt Birte. Why are they lying? She asked herself
