  • My name is Ling. I am a 32 year old Chinese man who lives in China. I also have a wife and a 5 year old son.
  • The living conditions in China aren't so great. There are many repeated wars and political revolutions. There is also a lot of famine and poverty here in China.
  • I think it's time for me to go work in the United States. I need to live a better life.
  • After crossing the Pacific Ocean, I have finally arrived in San Francisco Bay.
  • I worked on the Transcontinental Railroads. I had lower-paying wages than other workers, and worked in rough and dangerous conditions. I was largely responsible for laying down the tracks for the western railways.
  • The Chinese faced a lot of anti Chinese sentiment in the 1800's when they first came to California. We were easy to discriminate against because we didn't look, speak, dress or act like Americans and we held on to our unique culture. In that era immigrants were expected to assimilate and become part of the "Great American Melting Pot'
