Storyboard Text

  • When my uncle hung himself, my dad was devastated. I wanted to comfort him as much as possible. The numbers of people committing suicide went up from 14 to 17 in every 10,000 during the Great Depression, and many people were losing loved ones.
  • Four years later..
  • We were able to afford a one-room apartment, in a building my father's friend owned. We had to sleep on the floor, but it was worth it.
  • Four Dearborn hunger march protesters killed by soldiers armed with machine guns. (1932)
  • Pres. Hoover: Depression will come to an end. He does not think much of it. 6 million Americans unemployed.
  • Gross National Product $103.8 billion to $55.7 billion during Great Depression
  • We went to the newspaper vendor just around the corner from our apartment every Saturday.
  • Although we went through a lot during the time, we eventually got back up on our feet.
  • Half of the US banks failed, people were dying from hunger, dehydration, and living in poverty, but we made it.
  • My dad started working at a candy shop, which was great considering 15 million Americans were out of work.
  • Here you are Emma.
  • So I guess the moral of my story is, stay with the ones you love even during hard times. They will help you when no one else will.
