  • On Christmas day 1066, William took the crown of England after defeating another person who also wanted power at the battle of Hastings. he had the Domesday census taken to learn about his kingdom. This help William and his future kings build a successful system of collecting taxes, which would help them build up their kingdom.

  • In 1154 Henry 2 inherited the throne. He later expanded customs into laws , and sent the traveling justice to enforce the laws. He also developed an early jury system.

  • Henry son, John was a clever greedy and cruel untrustworthy ruler. During his reign, he faced 3 powerful enemies. King Phillip 2 of France, Pope Innocent 3 and his own english nobles. He lost to all three of them.

  • King John of England was force to sign the Magna Carta , which means "Great Charter" in 1215. Ideas from the Magna Carta still influence the system of government in many countries around the world.
