Oranges Gary Soto
Her house had a yellow porch light. Her dog barked at me until she walked out. I smiled.
We got to the drugstore. I lead her down the candy aisle. I asked her what she wanted. She had a light in her eyes and she was smiling.
She chose a chocolate that cost a dime. I didn't say anything. I paid with a dime and a orange. The lady held a knowing look in her eyes.
I took my girls hand, and we walked for two blocks. I let go of her hand so that she could unwrap her chocolate.
I ate my orange. It was so bright against the December gray, that it looked like I was making a fire in my hands.
