It is in chapter one that Equality finds the tunnel from the unmentionable times with International. This is important because it leads to the main conflict and plot of the story.
In chapter two Equality meets Liberty and we are able to see more of the society's customs are. We learn that men and women are not allowed to interact with each other. We also learn that they force the woman to do work in the fields with gardening.
In chapter three we learn of Equality's discovery of electricity when he accidentally makes a dead frog move. He discovers the source when he realizes "The frog had been hanging on a wire of copper, and it had been the metal of our knife which had sent a strange power to the copper through the brine of the frog's body".
