Set in Paris, France in 1880. Madame Loisel dreams of a lifestyle far beyond her reach. One day, her husband comes home with an invitation to a party that she is excited to attend, but upset that she will look dowdy.
I lost the necklace and I'm making my husband look for it, whoop dee doo!
Madame Loisel is not happy with her middle class lifestyle adn so much more in life.
Madame Loisel buys a new dress and borrows a diamond necklace from her friend, Madame Forestier, and goes to the party.
Madame Loisel loses her friends necklace after the party and her husband searches for it all night.
Madame Loisel borrows money and saves up some of her own money to buy a new necklace to replace the old one that she lost and goes into debt, and they have to move into someone else's attic.
Ten years after she and her husband go into debt they finally pay it off, and Madame Loisel finds Forestier and tells her about the necklace and finds out the original wasn't diamond but rather paste which a hard glassy substance used to imitate precious gems.
