  • Character- Randy & Ponyboy
  • Setting- Stay Gold
  • Character- Ponyboy & Johnny
  • Randy impacts Ponyboy through the conversations they share. This is seen when Ponyboy learns through Randy's explanation that even though the Socs are wealthy they still go through challenges. This conversation highlights the theme said that "things are rough all over" (117) This is important because Pony realizes that the Socs aren't perfect.
  • The setting impacts Ponyboy because he appreciates sunsets at the church and remembers a poem he read once and quotes it to Johnny. At this point, Pony realizes that he and Johnny are the only ones who can enjoy colors and "clouds and sunsets" (76). The setting allows Ponyboy to imagine beautiful things.
  • Johnny impacts Ponyboy because when Johnny dies Ponyboy realizes how important he is in his life. Even though Ponyboy knows Johnny is dead, Pony imagines that he is alive and not in the hospital, clearly, Ponyboy is sad about Johnny's death as seen when he says, "Johnny is not dead, I told myself", and I believed it" (151). Through this experience, Pony realizes how much Johnnny means to him
