The main character Ryan gets a new neighbor named Josh. They live in Seattle. They start playing baseball together for the rest of the summer. It turns out that Ryan used to be a good baseball player but broke his leg when he was 12 because he fell out of a tree. After that he didn't play sports.
Josh is the star quarterback and Ryan feels left out. Josh becomes very popular at school and isn't always nice to the other kids, especially Monica. Ryan and Josh don't hang out that much and Ryan feels bad.
Josh gets in trouble for being mean to Monica and gets suspended. Ryan's Grandpa comes for Christmas and shows him how to be a catcher. Ryan starts to practice baseball and getting in shape by working out. They start pitching and catching again and are hanging out again.
Ryan tries out for the baseball team and makes it. Josh helps him. Ryan does a good job and Josh is a really good pitcher. Ryan even gets a home run and becomes the starting catcher. They get along and the baseball team does good.
Josh and Monica get into again in English class. Ryan is walking home after practice one night and sees Josh and someone else assault Monica in the room she practices piano. Josh doesn't want Ryan to tell on him, but Ryan does because a detective came to his house. Ryan even tells Josh. The other guys on the team aren't nice to Ryan except one guy.
Ryan decides to go to community college so he registers. Josh didn't really get in a lot of trouble about Monica. He gets drafted by the Colorado Rockies for a million dollars. Ryan's family is proud of him for doing the right thing and Ryan feels better he did the right thing.
