A killer is running around New England killing people during what is called Strawberry Spring. This happens every 8 years.
A male student wants to know what is happening. Many more people are killed with the killer still being free. The police had one suspect but they turned out to be innocent.
Eventually the murders end. We see a 8 year time jump where the male student is now out of school, married, and has a kid. The murderer comes back and we find out that the student was the killer the entire time, Springheel Jack.
Choice Term (Suspense)
The boy is characterized as a smart and suspicious person. I believe he is probably static because we don't see him change throughout the entire story until the end when he is revealed to be the killer
The mood of the story is dark, ominous and creepy because a killer is running around murdering people and the reader is trying to figure out the identity of the killer throughout the story.
"I can hear my wife as I write this \, in the next room, crying. She thinks I was with another woman last night. And oh dear God, I think so too" (6). This makes you think if the character the reader has been following throughout the story is actually this killer.
