Percy is heroic, sometimes idiotic, and he he very nice. Percy has been going on adventures for the past 3 years (in the book series) and it shows in this book. As he was in sixth grade in the first book; he demonstrated child like characteristics then, but now he shows empathy when he comforts Annabeth about Luke's body being stolen by the titan Kronos.
"Nico tapped his silver ring . 'but that's not the real reason I've come. I've found out some things. I want to make you and offer.' 'What?' 'The way to beat Luke,' he said. 'If I'm right, it's the only way you'll stand a chance.'" (361
Luke is a former camper from Camp Half Blood, influenced by Kronos to attack the camp. Luke is manipulative and sly. Luke is also determined to reach his goals. This time, Luke's goal was to bring back Kronos by any means necessary, even if that means giving up his body for Kronos to use.
"'Maybe I can visit you,' I said. She shook her head. "No man ever find Ogygia twice, Percy. When you leave, I will never see you again.'" (225)
The main theme of the novel is that being a hero doesn't always mean you have to save the day. Rachel shows she is a hero when she decides to guide Percy and Annabeth around the labyrinth. she is a hero because she is assisting Percy and Annabeth by being the light that can guide them through the challenge of the labyrinth.
"He green eyes were bright with fear." (8)
This demonstrates suspense because it makes the reader think on what Nico's idea to defeat Luke is and how it will happen.
This foreshadows the possibility of Percy being the rare one and coming to Ogygia, possibly in a future book.
