  • During the american revolution on Thursday, September 11, 1777. The battle erupted near Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania.
  • Sir William Howe wanted to capture Philadelphia instead of going across New Jersey he sailed to Chesapeake Bay.
  • As soon as George Washington heard of this he he marched his army to Chadd's Ford, where Chesapeake Bay to Philadelphia crossed Brandywine Creek.

  • William Howe moved his troops so it would look that they were about to cross the ford. He also sent Charles Cornwallis with a army to cross Brandywine higher up.
  • Charles Cornwallis surprised the American army and drove them back George Washington was forced to retreat. William Howe also captured the forts below the city of Philadelphia.
  • George Washington tried to surprise the British army at Germantown but failed due to accidents and the weather The American army were forced to retire to Valley Forge.
