  • My father .........
  • Dr John Campbell thought there would be coal around the area that is now known as Browns Bay and had mining rights.
  • Peter Brown bought the 136 acres of land from Mrs Hamond in 1876. He built his house on what is now the Clyde Road and Anzac Road. The house was destroyed by fire in 1930. 
  • Peter Browns daughter Mrs Janet Ross wrote about her dads work.
  • With no school in Browns Bay a part time one was in a small building on Hyde Road. There had to be at least 10 children attending the school to keep it open! 
  • To support the growing population, Browns Bay acquired new stores, churches, a permanent school and numerous clubs. 
  • The tipping point for Browns Bay transforming into a suburb of Auckland rather than the beach resort it once was, occurred in the late 1950's with the completion of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
