  • David Lloyd George disagreed with mass offensives so he decided to under resource the army. General Maurice and DLG argued as the General disagreed with a civilian getting involved in a military matter
  • The Liberals
  • DLG, Edward Carson, ABL, Arthur Balfour and others created the war council which was a condensed down version of parliament for wartime. Asquith was not invited to the war council and DLG was the only liberal in it
  • The Conservatives
  • After a long debate with Asquith, who originally was against conscription, DLG finally got conscription in 1916. It was originally 18-41 with married men exempt, until they changed it to 18-51 and including married men
  • Labour
  • They were damaged by : the extension of state power an affront to liberal values, the impact of Lloyd George premiership, effects of electoral reform, loss of active support at grassroots level, personal dispute between leaders
  • Gained from : inclusion in Asquith and Lloyd George governments, consistent support for the war wins the patriotic vote, 1918 electoral reform benefits party, war experience of young conservative candidates broadens the party's understanding of society, attention paid to party organisation and fund raising
  • Initial division between Pro-war and peace elements in the party, but party gains from inclusion in Asquith and Lloyd George's coalition, breach with Lloyd George strengthens the party's moral status, adoption of a constitution adds to the party's political stability and acceptability, 1918 electoral reform helps treble its popular support
