Thrust into a world of desert and death, a lonely Adventurer seeks vengeance on a dark sorcerer, the Man in Black. killing an entire town, The Gunslinger continues on his quest to deal vengeance, dropping one co-traveler into the pit.
The Gunslinger is in pursuit of the sorcerer, the man in black, a man who killed his father. The Gunslinger goes to a town called Tull, to replenish his supplies and ask the whereabouts of the man in black. However, the man in black had set a trap, convincing everyone in Tull that The Gunslinger was the Interloper, or the creature that caused all the horrible things in the Bible. The Gunslinger then shot everyone in Tull.
After killing everyone in Tull, The Gunslinger finds a semi-large structure. In it he finds a boy by the age of 12, Jacob. Jake tells The Gunslinger that The Man in Black had come a day or two ago. The Gunslinger, wanting to continue with his quest, decides to take the boy along.
The Gunslinger awakens to find himself alone at the camp. He progresses to find a large clump of willow trees, in the center, an oracle alter, at which Jake lay, passed out. After the Gunslinger brought Jake back to camp, he went back to the oracle alter to communicate with it. It says of three beings , one called Heroin, one that comes on wheels, and one that shall be cast into the pit.
To reach the Man in Black, The Gunslinger must travel through the mountains, in which there are the slow mutants, phosphorous mutant people contorted into each a unique shape. The Gunslinger stumbles on these creatures. Jake doesn't make it.
The Gunslinger learns many things, some relevant, others not quite. The man in black tells the gunslinger his fortune, which speaks again of the three. Then eh wakes up, finding himself 10 years older, and the Man in Black, a skeleton in a rotting black robe.
