Storyboard Text

  • I'm so MAD!! I shall burn this flag to protest!
  • The man burning the American flag is named Gregory Lee Johnson. He is a Communist activist who intentionally burned an American flag during a protest in front of the Dallas City Hall. He did this during the National Republican Convention in 1984 to protest some Ronald Reagan administration policies.
  • OH NO!!!
  • Johnson goes to his district court because by burning the flag, he broke a Texas law stating that you can't vandalize respected objects, such as a flag. He was charged with breaking this law. He was found guilty by the jury and was found guilty. He was sentenced to one year in jail and a 2,000$ fine.
  • Sense Johnson was expressing his right to protest he was not guilty
  • Third Time's the charm?
  • Fortunately for him, Johnson didn't go to jail. He appealed his case and it went to the highest court in Texas that hears criminal cases: The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. This court reversed the previous court's ruling, so Texas asked the Supreme Court to hear his case.
  • Johnson went on to win the case in the supreme court 5 to 4
  • This was important to Americans because the now no that they can protest more and speek publicly more.
