I'm so MAD!! I shall burn this flag to protest!
The man burning the American flag is named Gregory Lee Johnson. He is a Communist activist who intentionally burned an American flag during a protest in front of the Dallas City Hall. He did this during the National Republican Convention in 1984 to protest some Ronald Reagan administration policies.
Johnson goes to his district court because by burning the flag, he broke a Texas law stating that you can't vandalize respected objects, such as a flag. He was charged with breaking this law. He was found guilty by the jury and was found guilty. He was sentenced to one year in jail and a 2,000$ fine.
Sense Johnson was expressing his right to protest he was not guilty
Third Time's the charm?
Fortunately for him, Johnson didn't go to jail. He appealed his case and it went to the highest court in Texas that hears criminal cases: The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. This court reversed the previous court's ruling, so Texas asked the Supreme Court to hear his case.
Johnson went on to win the case in the supreme court 5 to 4
This was important to Americans because the now no that they can protest more and speek publicly more.
