  • Mood/Setting
  • Foreshadowing
  • I have...
  • Why don't you have three sir?
  • Did you really have 3 wishes granted?
  • Theme
  • Here Lies Herbert White
  • Mood/Setting..."the night was cold and wet"."The new arrival also condoled with himself, so that Mrs. White said, “Tut, tut!” and coughed gently as her husband entered the room, followed by a tall, burly man, beady of eye and rubicund of visage.4“Sergeant-Major Morris,” he said, introducing him." Sargent Major Morris knocks on the door of the Whites villa in the pouring rain, and he comes in to find Mr. White upset. This shows us that the night was cold and wet which makes a mood that is uncertain. Many horror stories use cold and rainy nights as a setting to create a mood that gets us ready for a scare or tragedy,
  • He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it.“Well, why don’t you have three, sir?” said Herbert White cleverly. The soldier regarded him in the way that middle age is wont to regard presumptuous youth. “I have,” he said quietly, and his blotchy face whitened.“And did you really have the three wishes granted?” asked Mrs. White.“I did,” said the sergeant-major, and his glass tapped against his strong teeth.Sargent Major Morris tells Mr. White of what happend to the paw and why it has magical powers. He tells Mr White in a nervous tone that he did have his 3 wishes. This hints to something bad that is to come if he wishes which is foreshadowing.
  • Theme"... the old people buried their dead, and came to a house steeped in shadow and silence. It was all over so quickly they could hardly realize it." "...“He was caught in the machinery,” said the visitor at length in a low voice." "...present you with a certain sum as compensation.”Mr. White dropped his wife’s hand, and rising to his feet, gazed with a look of horror at his visitor. His dry lips shaped the words, “How much?”“Two hundred pounds,” was the answer.'" They had buried their son after he was caught in the machinery, as a result of wishing 200 pounds from the paw. The theme was to be happy with what you have, and the family had wished for more things, showing that they weren't thankful for what they already had. This resulted in the paw granting the wish but causes Herbert to be killed in the process, which backs up the theme since they lost a loved one for not being happy with what they had.
