  • This is where we the people decide which democrat vs which republican
  • January --> Primary elections and caucuses
  • Election year starts with primaries and caucuses. 
  • Who should we nominate for this election?
  • The important dates to remember, these dates are when the vote for candidates is happening
  • How states vote?
  • Some states everyone can vote for any candidate of a party while others can only be apart of the same party 
  • Super Tuesday? isn't that the day that 10 states vote?
  • There are 2286 delegates, the winner is the candidate that receive more than half the votes
  • How votes work
  • The citizens don't vote directly for the president, they elect delegates that a committed to one presidential candidate.
  • If none of the candidates gets more than half the votes negotiations are held. Some candidates may withdraw so delegates have to revote
  • The number of electors a state has is decided by the number of citizens
  • Election Day --> 6th of Novembe
  • The citizens over 18 can vote for the president, but not directly but through electors.
  • But the states aren't assigned to the candidates are they, don't they do that by what they are usually for
  • There are some states that are easier to control than others, some states are inherently one-sided.
  • Winner takes all
  • The states follow the winner takes all rule, that if one candidate gets more than another they take all the votes
  • There are 538 electors in the united states, and the winner needs to get <50%
  • The electors cast their votes on the 17th of decemeber
  • Desicion is made
  • The electors have chosen the new president, for the next four years.
