  • Conflict

  • I hate that horrible blue eye!
  • The narrator is introduced. He wishes to prove his sanity to the readers despite having killed a man over a deformed eye.
  • Climax
  • The narrator lives in the same building as the old man with the blue eye. It bothers the narrator to his core.
  • Falling Action
  • Over the next 8 days the narrator plots killing the old man to rid himself of the eye. Every night he enters the old man's room with a lantern, until he sees the blue eye.
  • Resolution
  • I did it! I can't stand the sound of that beating heart any longer!
  • The narrator can not take the "eye" looking upon him any longer and smothers the old man to death with his mattress. He hides the body under the floor boards, but begins to hear the heart beat.
  • Someone reports the noise and police show up at the narrator's door. They ask questions and the narrator denies anything happens. All the while, he hears the constant beat of the heart.
  • The sound of the beating heart eventually drives the narrator mad (as if he wasn't already) and he confesses to everything!
