  • Tom shrunk back, but too late. He had left his little bible at the bottom of his coat pocket, and his big bible on the desk buried under the mortgage.

  • "They shook hands, and struck a bargain. A few days' time saw Tom Walker seated behind his desk in a counting house in Boston. His reputation for a ready moneyed man."

  • "Tom had a lurking dread that the devil, after all, would have his due. That he might not be taken unawares, therefore, it is said he always carried a small bible in his coat pocket."

  • He thought with regret on the bargain he had made with his black friend, and set his wits to work to cheat him out of the conditions. He became, therefore, all of a sudden , a violent church goer.

  • "The next evening she set off again for the swamp, with her apron heavily laden. Tom waited and waited for, but in vain: midnight came, but she did not make her appearance; morning, noon, night returned but still she did not come."
