A long time ago, Ranginui and Papatuanuku were not separated and they were together Tane mahuta grumbled and wanted to see the light .
Tane Mahuta pushed his parents apart and it formed the heavens and the earth. Ranginui the father of the sky and Paptuanuku as the earth. Tawhirimatea was so angry he tore out his eyes and hurled it into the sky creating Matariki.
The stars formed a constellation. Now Matariki accompanies the sun on his journey back to south marking the end of winter and also reminds us that it is the Maori new year.
