  • Claude Auchinleck
  • Erwin Rommel
  • The Battle of El Alamein was fought in Egypt between Axis (Germany and Italy) and Allied (Britain, British India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand) forces of the 8th Army.
  • The Axis forces were commanded under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and Allied forces of the 8th Army were under General Claude Auchinleck.
  • Initially, Axis forces had 96,000 troops, 70 tanks, and 500 planes. Allied forces had 150,000 troops, 179 tanks, 1000+ artillery pieces, and 1500+ planes. Clearly, the Allied forces had the upper hand as far as numbers, but we will see how that plays out in later episodes.
  • I am the new commander of Britain's 8th Army!
  • After taking Tobruk, a port in Northeastern Libya, Axis forces moved east into Egypt where they met British defenses at El Alamein on June 30th 1942.
  • Rommel and the Axis forces attacked the line of Allied defenses on July 1st and July 2nd 1942, and British commander Auchinleck counterattacked. By mid July, Rommel was blocked at El Alamein, therefore ending the first battle.
  • Because Auchinleck refused an order to counterattack German troops, Winston Churchill dismissed him. Auchinleck's replacement was killed, and Bernard Montgomery took command of Britain's 8th Army.
