Tom is walking through a forest that is supposedly haunted and he meets a black man who was rumored to be the "Devil" dressed in "a rude half-indian garb, had a red belt or sash swathed around his body" and he is offered a deal in exchange for his soul.
Tom notifies his wife of the deal he had made with the Devil and she tries to persuade him to accept the deal so they can be rich but Tom says no to mainly annoy her. So Tom's wife goes into the forest seeking out the devil because she wants to acquire the money for herself and doesn't return
Tom accepts the deal that the Devil had offered and becomes a corrupt money lender that the poor depend on and makes large amounts of money
After years and years of stealing and taking money from people, Tom starts to think about the life he will have after his death because of the deal he made with the Devil. So he decides to go to church in the hopes of changing this outcome
Sadly, the outcome of Tom's death is still the same because even though he started to go to church, he did not change his actions nor did he have a change of heart. Tom was still laundering money from poor people and one day, he was swept away by a figure in all black while all of the wealth he acquired in his lifetime was burnt to the ground
