After Kitchi-Manitou first peopled the Earth, the Anishinaabe began to argue. Upon seeing that respect for living things no longer prevailed, Kitchi-Manitou chose to purify the Earth.
Kitchi-Manitou chose to do this by way of a great flood (mush-ko'-be-wun'), therefore destroying the Anishinaabe people and most of the animals. Only Nanaboozhoo survived, along with some animals who could swim and fly.
After a long while, Nanaboozhoo, accompanied by the other animals who had survived the flood, said, I am going to swim to the bottom of this water and grab a handful of earth, and with that earth, I think that we can make new land.
Nanaboozhoo dived into the water. He was gone for a very long time. When he returned to the surface, he told the animals, short of breath, the water is too deep for me to get to the bottom. No one said a thing.
After a long silence, Mahng, the Loon, spoke, I will dive to the bottom. That's how I catch my food. Mahng disappeared and was gone for a very long time. After the others all thought he had surely drowned, he surfaced.
I couldn't make it. There must be no bottom to this water! Mahng said. Then Zhing-gi-biss, the helldiver, said, I can dive great distances! I will try next. So Zhing-gi-biss dove and didn't return for a very long time.
