In the beginning of time, there was only water and marshland below, and sky above.
The god Olorun ruled the sky, while Olokun ruled everything below, including the water and marshlands
One day, one of the other gods, Obatala, asked for permission to create dryland, where all living creatures can inhabit and live.
Once he was given permission, he sought Orunmila, the god of prophecy, for advice.
Orunmila explained he would need a golden chain to reach from the heavens down into the marshlands, a snail's shell full of sand, a white hen, and a palm nut, all of which in a bag he needed to carry down to the land.
Obatala began to climb down to the marshlands, where he dumped the sand into the water, and immediately threw the white hen into the water
