Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her mother, Vernier Lee, was 18 at the time, and her father, Vernon Winfrey, was 20.
Her unmarried parents split after her birth, so she was raised on a farm by her grandmother. She was taught to read by the age of three, and skipped kindergarten and second grade.
She has stated that she was molested during her childhood and early teens and became pregnant at 14; her son was born prematurely and died in infancy.
