  • Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her mother, Vernier Lee, was 18 at the time, and her father, Vernon Winfrey, was 20.
  • Her unmarried parents split after her birth, so she was raised on a farm by her grandmother. She was taught to read by the age of three, and skipped kindergarten and second grade.
  • She has stated that she was molested during her childhood and early teens and became pregnant at 14; her son was born prematurely and died in infancy.
