John, a carpenter, is living with a student named Nicholas. he is married to a young girl named Alison. Alison is very beautiful, and lots of men in town are attracted to her, including Nicholas, and a clerk named Absolon.
Nicholas tells his roommate John that he has received a vision from God, and that there will be a huge flood on Monday. John, falling for the absurd vision, does everything that Nicholas tells him to. Nicholas plans to derive a night with Alison by distracting John with this vision.
As John sleeps outside as a part of Nicholas' plan, Nicholas is inside of his bedroom, sleeping with his wife, Alison and Nicholas are waking up, they are interrupted by Absolon, who stops by Alison's room in hopes of a kiss.
Alison plays a trick on Absolon and gives him a 'kiss'. Absolon, upset, plans to avenge Alison and grabs a hot branding iron to burn Alison, but instead burns Nicholas.
John, who is in a tub on the roof in preparation for the flood, hears Nicholas' calls for water and assumes the flood has begun. He cuts himself free from the roof and falls to the ground, breaking his arm.
The townspeople watch as John suffers from a broken arm, and Nicholas suffers from a burn. Alison and Nicholas try to convince the townspeople that John is crazy, and they all laugh at him.
