  • I am so excited for my new computer, Ethan, but I just don't know how to put my software on it. Can you help me, please?
  • I live for this stuff Grandma! I'd love to help you!
  • First, lets check to make sure your system meets all the requirements by right-clicking Start, then click System to view the system properties on the System page in the Control Panel. Looks like it all checks out.
  • This is where you can customize the options for your program.
  • Grandma Amy: "I keep hearing about apps, software, clouds and programs and I'm a little confused as to what's what!  Ethan laughs - "Don't worry Grandma. Software programs make our computer useful. In Microsoft’s terminology, applications are “Desktop Apps,” and the light-weight programs are “Windows Apps.” Locally-installed software is installed on a device and runs directly on that device. Cloud-based software runs on a dedicated server, not on your computer, and is designed to be accessed over the Internet.
  • What do I do if I download and install something and then I don't really like it, or if it stops working like its supposed? Can I still have updates when a new version comes out?
  • Ethan - "To install the program, we are going to the Click-to-Run Installer and follow the step by step installation process. We'll go through the license agreement, where to store the software, certain components we would want to install and then finish it up. Maybe we should add a shortcut for you as well." Grandma Amy - " Oh Ethan, I don't know what I would've done without you. I'm so excited to have a new computer than can do so many things!"
  • Thank you so much for helping me with my software today, Ethan! I made these cookies just for you!
  • Ethan: "In Microsoft Office applications, you access default program settings on the File tab of the ribbon. The File tab displays the Office Backstage view, which is the view you use for file and program management tasks. The Options dialog box also contains several tabs that provide access to various settings that control how the program functions on your system. Different commands and settings are available in different programs in the Office suite; however, these settings are always accessed through the tabs of the Options dialog box."
  • Thanks Grandma! You know I love spending time with you AND eating cookies!
  • Ethan: "Windows also has this great thing called an App Store. An app store is a digital store for software that you can download. Windows 10 comes with built-in apps including OneNote, Mail, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Photos, Camera, Games, People, Maps, Calendar, Money, and Alarms, but you can get more at the Windows Store. Click the “store” icon in the taskbar to open the Store app and browse the store."
  • Ethan: "Wow grandma, you really have some great questions! If there is an app that you download and don't need anymore, you can uninstall it by using the Uninstall a program command on the Programs and Features page in the Control Panel. The Microsoft Office suite includes a repair utility that you can access through the Programs and Features page in the Control Panel. Click the suite in the list box and then click Change to access the repair tool. Many programs are designed to automatically check online for updates and to display alert messages to indicate when a new update is ready for download and installation."
  • Ethan closes the laptop cover. Grandma Amy and her grandson, Ethan, enjoy warm, chocolate chips cookies together.
