Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy to produce glucose--their food--with carbon dioxide and water while releasing oxygen.
The chlorophyll specifically--located in the chloroplast--captures the sunlight for the production of creation of glucose for light dependent reactions and releases oxygen.
Plants are able to make glucose without light energy. In light independent reactions, the ATP and NADPH produced from the light dependent reactions fuel the light independent ones.
The chemical formula that represents the process is 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2
